5 Top Tips to Save Money on Your Energy Bill

The Met Office recently confirmed that summer 2018 was the UK’s joint hottest ever on record (alongside 1976, 2003 and 2006), and the hottest that England has ever experienced. However, now the summer season has drawn to a close and the darker nights start to creep in, there is one question on every homeowner’s lips – when shall we switch the heating on?

The cost of your heating needn’t be something that keeps you awake at night. Mark Roper, CEO of Trusted Energy Solutions based at Sherwood Energy Village explains, “The best way to save energy is not to lose it in the first place. Many of our clients don’t realise the great cost savings they can make by investing in the right energy solutions.” Mark shares his 5 Top Tips for saving money on your energy bill this autumn and winter.

1. Add loft insulation

Ensure your low-cost home insulation measures are up to standard. Adding loft insulation of 270 mm (11 inches) is now recommended. If you are using less than this, then you are essentially throwing your money away.

2. Install a programmable thermostat

You can improve your energy efficiency and home comfort by replacing a simple on/off or dial thermostat with a programmable thermostat. Installing a programmable thermostat reduces energy usage when you are away at work or sleeping. They can save a homeowner 10-30% on heating bills when used correctly and many of them can be controlled through your smartphone.

3. Use your boiler for hot water

Many people opt to use their electrical immersions for hot water usage rather than using their boilers. This is a mistaken belief that it will save you money! Check the fuel cost rankings at the bottom of this post.*

4. Invest in a heat pump

If you are running a heating system on oil, LPG, solid fuel or electricity and live in a reasonably well insulated home, you might want to consider investing in a heat pump. Government subsidies over 7 years are typically £8,000-£10,000 for an air source heat pump and £14,000-£30,000 for a ground source heat pump.

5. Upgrade your boiler

If your boiler is ageing (15 years +) and requires a lot of servicing, then it might be time to consider an upgrade. You could save 15-20% on your fuel costs just on boiler efficiency – so it’s worth the upgrade.*The price ranking of the main heating systems in kiloWatt hours (kWh) is typically:

  1. Heat Pumps:                               4-5 p/kWh
  2. Mains Gas Boiler:                       4.5-6 p/kWh
  3. Oil Boiler:                                    5.5-6.5  p/kWh
  4. LPG Boiler:                                 6-7  p/kWh
  5. Solid fuel boiler:                          6.5-7.5 p/kWh
  6. Electric boiler / immersion:         13-14 p/kWh

Are You Being Mis-sold a Heat Pump?

As a business that trades on its reputation and tries to operate ethically, we thought we should highlight some of the mis-selling practices that we are increasingly coming across in the industry.

We take 5-6 enquiries a month from customers who have been approached by ‘dodgy’ heat pump installers – their sales approach and offer looks something like this:

  • Cold-Calling: The customer has been cold-called;
  • Exaggerated Energy Saving Calculations: They have been told they will make substantial energy cost savings against their existing heating system irrespective of what fuel their existing heating system uses;
  • Promised Excessive Subsidies: They are promised excessive subsidies under the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive scheme;
  • Overpriced and Oversized: The heat pump system proposed (generally air source) is substantially overpriced, sometimes by as much as 200%, and the heat pump is often substantially oversized;
  • Persuasive Selling Strategy: In the worst cases the salesman will ‘door-step’ the customer and try to coerce the customer into signing a contract there and then.
How Do You Know If A Heat Pump Is Mis-sold?

Mains Gas: If you have mains gas to your property then a heat pump system is unlikely to make financial sense for you – running costs for mains gas heating systems are similar to heat pump systems and have been for the last 5 years.

Subsidy Promises: As of September 2017 the Renewable Heat Incentive for domestic installations has been capped. In practice this means that maximum subsidies for air source heat pumps will be in the region of £1,500 per annum and for ground source will be in the region of £4,300 per annum, both paid for 7 years.

Heat Pump Pricing: Current typical supply and installation prices for an air source heating system (excluding any radiator changes), including hot water and using a high quality heat pump with a 7 year warranty, are somewhere in the region of:

8 kW                      – £9,500

12 kW                    – £10,500

16 kW                    – £11,500

For heating only installations, around £1,500 can be taken off these prices.

Equivalent output ground source prices are in the region of 50-70% higher, excluding the groundworks.

If you are being quoted substantially more then you are probably being mis-sold.

If you are being quoted substantially less then:

  • It is probably not a quality heat pump
  • It will probably not be installed to a decent standard
  • You probably won’t be able to contact your installer in 6 months’ time due to poor post-installation service or even liquidation!

Feeling the Pinch of Costly Heating Bills?

Replace a fossil fuel heating system with a more cost-effective energy efficient heat pump and reap the benefits of the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive payback.

A typical 3 bedroomed detached property with average levels of insulation could receive around £900 a year in payback for a guaranteed 7 years from the Renewable Heat Incentive that pays you back as you heat your property.

Solar Panels Still Make Financial Sense

Despite the sharp reduction in government subsidy rates that took effect at midnight last night, the Solar Trade Association (STA) state that a domestic solar installation can still deliver tax-free rates of return of 5% under the new tariff.

Paul Barwell, chief executive of the STA, acknowledges that the cuts in tariff were excessive and counterproductive but that solar still represents a good investment for householders.  He states that

“Solar technology is exceptionally reliable and attractive and the solar industry has proved itself to be the best energy sector in the world at bringing costs down and developing innovative products”

Our own calculations suggest the following:

A current 4kW domestic Solar PV installation financial example;

  • System generates in the region of 3,500kWh a year
  • Generation payment tariff of 4.39p/kWh
  • Export payment tariff of 4.85p/kWh
  • Electricity savings of £225

Totals approximately £460 a year which equates to a return on investment of up to 9%

Renewable Heat Incentive – what’s that?

If you haven’t heard of the Renewable Heat Incentive, you’re not alone.

According to their own survey, awareness of the Department of Energy and Climate Change’s  Renewable Heat Incentive is very low, with just over one in ten people claiming to have heard of it.

We guess the scheme budget didn’t extend to actually promoting it – it’s a good thing we are! Give us a call if you want to know more.
